The Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty is a law and policy organization based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Established in 2011, WILL has become one of the preeminent state-based litigation centers and think tanks in the country, growing to ten lawyers. Through strategic litigation and timely policy reports, WILL seeks to advance the public interest in free markets, limited government, individual liberty and a robust civil society, including educational freedom and reform.

About the Associate Counsel Opening

The Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty is looking for an Associate Counsel to join our litigation team to further our K-12 and education reform efforts. The Associate Counsel will work closely with both the litigation team and the Director of Policy to conduct legal research, analyze legislation, engage with policymakers, empower parents, expand educational options and hold government accountable. This position will also have the opportunity to directly litigate cases on K-12 and education reform matters if so desired.

The applicant must exhibit strong written and research skills and be able to work collaboratively with others. Opportunities to do media writing and appearances and engage in public speaking to grassroots and national organizations will be available. Recent law school graduates are welcome to apply.

Salary is competitive with an exceptionally attractive benefits package, including health, life, dental, HSA and 401(k) plan.

WILL has a flexible working environment and is open to a virtual hire for this position. There is a slight preference for a Wisconsin-based candidate, and a virtual hire should be available to travel to Wisconsin as needed (approximately once per month). Wisconsin-based hires are able to work from home several days a week, and can be expected to travel within Wisconsin approximately 1-2 days per month. The Associate Counsel will also have the opportunity to attend conferences nationwide approximately 4 to 6 times per year, though not all are required.

Job Duties

  • Advise parents, school leaders and allies who request information about their legal rights concerning K-12 education-related issues
  • Conduct legal research on issues related to school choice, parents’ rights, federalism and regulatory and procedural challenges (including state and federal legal issues)
  • Assist with litigation if so desired
  • Analyze legislation, regulations and policies
  • Engage with policymakers
  • If interested, write opinion pieces and engage with the media
  • If interested, engage in public speaking to stakeholders

Job Requirements

  • Juris Doctor
  • 0-5 years of litigation experience preferred, new lawyers will be considered (fellowships and clerkships may be considered experience)
  • Legal analysis experience preferred
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Solid commitment to individual liberties and educational freedom
  • Eligibility for admission to the bar of the State of Wisconsin
