March is National Problem Gambling Awareness Month. Compulsive gambling, often referred to as a “hidden illness,” is characterized by the uncontrollable urge to keep gambling despite the toll it takes on one’s life. The Mayo Clinic explains that gambling can stimulate the brain’s reward system much like drugs or alcohol can, leading to addiction. Gambling can destroy lives and families. During the month of March, the Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling hopes to raise awareness of this serious addiction and provide helpful resources.
The Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling estimates that over 333,000 Wisconsin residents have a gambling problem. This number is conservative but represents almost 6% of Wisconsin’s total population. It’s time to take this issue seriously. This month is a great time to talk to friends and family about saying “no” to gambling.
