The concept of a neighborhood school is often tied to public school systems. However, private schools also embody this approach. While walking the halls of Mount Calvary Lutheran School in Milwaukee, a sense of community is palpable. Principal Dr. Trenae Howard greets students by name, a nod to her dedication to establishing relationships with the children she has served since taking on the role of principal last school year. Dr. Howard’s vision for Mount Calvary is for it to be a trusted pillar of the surrounding community. Because of their involvement in the choice programs, families from all income levels can be included.

The school’s increased enrollment over the years is a testament to this. With enrollment growth comes the need to hire more faculty and staff, maintain or upgrade facilities, and invest in updated academic materials, all things that Dr. Howard prioritizes. The day-to-day needs of the school, however, are always at the top of this list: 1) make students feel safe and respected, and 2) help them learn. As the saying goes, it takes a village to make this happen.

Mount Calvary works to achieve these goals and more by maintaining community engagement. Last month, the school hosted a week-long Black History Month celebration to honor their student population, and their upcoming “Barbeque and Bingo” night will allow friends and families of current students to connect and raise funds for future endeavors. The school often welcomes local leaders and Mount Calvary graduates to work with students and speak about college and career pathways, inspiring the next generation. Schools like this flourish when their connections to the community run deep. It’s something that parents value when provided with educational options for their children.
