It seems obvious that parents would choose to send their children to a religious school because they want them to receive a faith-based education. However, many factors go into the decision to attend such a school. Take Lindsay Serrahn, a reading interventionist at St. Paul’s in Algoma, for example. In addition to working at St. Paul’s, she and her husband send their children there and are familiar with the school because her husband is an alumnus. Although Lindsay did not have a religious upbringing like her husband, she has no regrets about enrolling her children.
Lindsay’s reasons for working at and sending her children to St. Paul’s run parallel. The school’s size and connection with its local church allow her to develop genuine relationships with the community. As a staff member, she gets to know her students on a deeper level. As a parent, she knows her kids are in good hands with the friendly, approachable faculty and staff who want to see her children succeed.
Lindsay has a friend who was skeptical about sending her children to a religious school, but was searching for a better alternative to the one they were currently attending. Through Lindsay’s recommendation and assurance, her friend enrolled the children at St. Paul’s and has not looked back. According to Lindsay, she has “seen so much good come out of the school.” The values instilled in students, like respect, compassion, and safety, transcend religious beliefs and practices. We want all children to feel respected, practice compassion, and learn safely, regardless of what school they attend.
