Wisconsin Congressman Bryan Steil (CD-01), in response to the growing number of teens experiencing hopelessness, depression, and suicidal thoughts, recently co-authored a bill to protect children from the negative mental health effects associated with technology, especially social media. If the bill passes, the Center for Mental Health Services will be required to study how this technology affects children and create safeguards to protect them from online harm.

As technology advances and social media continues to capture the attention of young people, Congress should seriously consider this bill and any other proposal that will help children avoid the very real dangers of ever-changing technology. But parents remain their children’s best hope for protection in this critical area.
