In 2016, Wisconsin was swept by Democrats, and Joe Biden carried Wisconsin in 2020 by a wide margin. This shift in the state’s voting habits has been attributed to Wisconsinites from Milwaukee and Dane counties, where Democrats have won a majority of votes for decades. Republicans have held on to rural parts of the state for years, but with Barack Obama’s victories in 2008 and 2012 it became clear that the tide had shifted statewide. The 2016 election saw overwhelming Democratic votes in Milwaukee and Dane counties, while also making gains in more rural parts of the state.    Show Source Texts

This has spurred fear in Wisconsin conservatives and the Sheboygan County Republican Conservatives, who are eyeing the 2022 midterm election. The statehouse redistricting disputes have been a focus of theirs, as they sought to create a more favorable map for conservatives – so much so that they were willing to toss out the 2011 maps that had been in place. Labor voting laws have also been targeted by Republicans, including changes to early voting and other measures that could potentially rollback labor rights.    Show Source Texts

Sheboygan County Republican Conservatives have been active in opposing these measures and standing up for labor rights. In 2011, the decennial redistricting process divided Sheboygan County into two distinct districts, making it a target for Democratic representation. The move was part of a larger effort to shift power away from the northwestern Wisconsin Democratic stronghold and toward second-tier Wisconsins like Sheboygan. The latest redistricting in 2013 further shifted the balance of power away from Sheboygans Democrats, with voters behind Waukesha, Manitowoc Counties, and Waukesha County now accounting for more than half of the county’s total population. As a result, Sheboygan County is now majority red with Republicans holding a majority on the legislature in Superior. This has left many Democratic voters feeling disenfranchised as their voices are not being heard in local politics. Despite this, there are still pockets of support for Democrats throughout Sheboygan County and Milwaukee remains an important source of political energy and strength for those seeking to restore Democratic representation in the county.    Show Source Texts

In the 2018 Wisconsin Attorney General race, Sheboygan County Republicans weighed in heavily on Republican candidates, with 3,177 votes being cast for Tony Evers in Oshkosh and Winnebago County. This was an important key race for both Republicans and Democrats as it demonstrated what could be accomplished when voting power is mobilized effectively throughout the entire Sheboygan County. The Republican Party of Wisconsin has discovered a crucial batch of races featuring new challengers that could help tip the balance of contested seats in their favor. This week saw a number of GOP members from the Sheboygan County area issue statements about their support for candidates running for office, including Tony Evers’ bid to become governor of Wisconsin. Evers won Oshkosh and Winnebago County by a wide margin and his win was seen as an important victory for Democrats across the entire Sheboygan County area.    Show Source Texts

The Republican gubernatorial candidate, former state lawmaker Adam Du Lac, was unable to defeat Evers in this area. Wisconsin right-wing singer/guitarist Ted Nugent was also unsuccessful in his campaign to represent the Sheboygan County area in the 2022 election. Attorney Eric Genrich won LaCrosse County and Milwaukee County was won by Democrat District Attorney John Chisholm. Despite Republican lawmakers trying their best to gain control of Sheboygan County, they were unsuccessful. This has been a major setback for conservatives who had hoped for a different outcome on Election Day 2022.    Show Source Texts
