From the Green Bay Press-Gazette: “At Monday night’s School Board meeting, the district’s Facilities Task Force made its official recommendations to the board to close 11 schools, including the district headquarters, and repurpose seven buildings to accommodate different programs or grade levels. Many of the district’s 42 buildings are below capacity and in need of maintenance.” Read more here and here.
Additional context from IRG Senior Research Director Quinton Klabon:
- Green Bay faces massive deficits for a variety of reasons, and closing one-quarter of their buildings is a big step toward higher efficiency. Buildings are 76% full now, even though changes will not finish until 2026.
- Like many districts, Green Bay will consolidate because housing and business development has been uneven, causing the western side to empty out. Strong city leadership and businesses should develop with families and schools in mind.
