Tomorrow at 10 a.m., there will be a public hearing in the state capitol for Assembly Bill 104, which is appropriately named the “Help Not Harm” bill. If passed, it would protect children in Wisconsin who are dealing with gender confusion from being prescribed puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones or undergoing irreversible surgeries. A similar bill was introduced and passed last legislative session but was vetoed by Governor Evers.
Allowing doctors to give developing youth puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and even to perform these surgeries violates the first duty of medicine: do no harm. Affirming a mistaken identity is not loving or compassionate. True love seeks the authentic good, which means confronting reality and providing real help, not supporting falsehoods that too often lead to real harm.
